NRP 77 Press Conference: Presentation of the Synthesis Report

On 28 May 2026, NRP 77 presented its synthesis report for the first time. Five years of research, 46 research teams, 12 considerations – and a clear message: digital transformation is a challenge for society as a whole.
On 28 May 2026, the National Research Programme "Digital Transformation" (NRP 77) launched its synthesis report for the first time at a press conference in Bern. The synthesis report compiles together the findings from five years of research into Switzerland's digital transformation. 46 research teams examined digital change in education, labour markets, and democracy. The Steering Committee of NRP 77 has distilled these into twelve evidence-based considerations for policy, business, and society.
Abraham Bernstein, Chair of the Steering Committee, introduced the programme's objectives and findings, and contextualised the twelve considerations. His key message: digital transformation is not a purely technological development, but a societal challenge that society must actively be shaped. Only if policy, business, and society act together can Switzerland seize the opportunities of digital change and limit its risks.
Three project examples from NRP 77
At the press conference, three research teams presented selected examples of their work: Conny Wunsch showed how digital transformation is changing the labour market – and why women are at particular risk of falling behind. Mark Eisenegger examined young people's news consumption and its significance for democracy. Marlène Gerber investigated under what conditions digital tools can genuinely strengthen democratic participation.
